I've been a writer longer than I've been anything else other than Black and female. For a long time my writing was very white-centric. White characters with white problems living little white lives. Even in writing fantasy and science fiction. White everything.
That was all I saw in the fantasy and science fiction books I read growing up. It was predominantly what was shown in other forms of media as well from TV and movies to beauty magazines.
I didn't even realize I was writing whiteness or why until my 20s when I had a major wake up call into my own oppressive conditionings from childhood books and media, and saw how much feeling invisible in the world as a Woman of Color had ingrained itself into my own creative writing. I didn't even feel like I could put someone who looked like me on the page.
In this week's video watch how my writing changed with this discovery, as well as why we all as creatives of color need to dig out and dismantle our oppressive conditionings and beliefs to unlock the powerful potential of our creative work.
